Why Do We Do Prison Ministry?

June 15, 2024, was our first full day in Mozambique on this current mission. We visited the Moatize Prison and brought them sugar, flour, and soap that we had purchased for them. Here in Mozambique, inmates rely heavily on family, friends, and the kindness of strangers to just have the bare necessities. In the prison, Tome led the praise and worship, Isaiah read the Word of God, and Pastor Omar Fisher preached on Jeremiah 29:4-14…”God’s Plan Is Good.” But before we all went to the prison, we heard Pastor David Banda’s story of how he graduated from seminary and his bishop said they wanted to send someone into the predominately atheist Mozambique in order to start a church. Pastor Banda said, “I will go,” and went on faith. He shared how difficult it was starting out in 2015 and how they started the church with 6 people in a borrowed space. But now, in 2024, with organizations like Making Others Righteous coming beside them and supporting, they have their own church with 80-100 people on a Sunday. He also shared how in doing prison ministry, they had to get approval from different government officials to go in the prisons, which  resulted in Pastor Banda being well-known and respected all over the country. This has opened the door for them to be able to plant more churches which are coming in the near future. We do prison ministry in obedience to the Lord’s calling on our lives, but God uses it in His wonderful and perfect plan to do much more than we ever intended. God’s plan is Good!!
