Remember Rainbows – Genesis 9

12…”This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:

13“I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.

14“It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud;

15“and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.

16“The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”

– Genesis 9:12-19

Sin erupted in the earth. People overwhelmingly chose sinful ways over following a Holy God. As a consequence God flooded the earth and started humanity over with Noah and his family and two of every animal.  Genesis 6:5 speaks of the great wickedness and evil intents of the hearts of humanity. But after a 600 year old Noah lived in the ark for 150 days on a flooded earth, God set a sign, the rainbow. Rainbows signal to us that the rain has stopped and the sun is shining, but they are more importantly a reminder that God would never flood the world again. And it should remind us that even though we serve a Righteous God, we serve a loving God who made a promise not to destroy us by water. Not that we do not deserve it, we are still sinful with evil intents, but that He will not do it. Simply because He loves us and is a merciful God.  So the next time you see a rainbow, smile, and know that you are loved.
